Lesson 1 — My Journey Into Computing
Computing is everywhere — from smartphones and cars to medicine and music. In this lesson, we’ll look at how curiosity about technology can turn into a journey of discovery and problem-solving.
Quick Check: Which of these is an example of computing in daily life?
Opening Hook
I still remember the first time I sat in front of a computer. It was slow, noisy, and nothing like the sleek devices we have now. But even then, I was amazed by what it could do. That curiosity — “How does this work?” — was the spark that started my computing journey.
Think about your own first memory of technology. Was it exciting? Confusing? Fun?
Logic Puzzle
Problem-solving is at the heart of computing. Let’s test that with a classic puzzle:
You have two ropes that each take exactly one hour to burn, but they burn inconsistently. How can you measure exactly 45 minutes?
Reveal Solution
Light Rope A at both ends and Rope B at one end. When Rope A finishes, 30 minutes have passed. Immediately light the other end of Rope B — it will finish in 15 minutes. That’s 45 minutes total.
Reflection Prompts
Computing is not just about machines — it’s about people, ideas, and creativity. Reflect on these questions:
- When was the first time you used technology, and how did it make you feel?
- Why do you want to learn more about computing? What do you hope to gain from this course?
